Data for Effective Scaling
This webinar is intended to share theories and lessons learned to support campus and system leaders in their scaling efforts. Jason Lane, Executive Director of the Strategic, Academic and Innovative Leadership (SAIL) Institute for the State University of New York and a member of the TS3 steering committee, will discuss the theory change regarding large change efforts. Robert Todd, Director of Policy and Partnership Development at the University System of Georgia, will present on the role of data in scaling efforts. USG was awarded the TS3 HIPs grant in December, so he will also share a little bit about USG’s TS3 HIPs project.
Building A Value Based Culture Around Data Analytics
A rapidly growing trend among higher education institutions is to increase the abundance and availability of student data. Included are traditional data such as demographics and academic performance; newly emerging data from learning management systems and student ID card usage; and outcomes data including employment, wages, and volunteerism. When assembled, this data can create remarkable profiles of individual students and provide new insights into how to improve the learning experience. For example, they can yield new insights as to which curriculum designs, instructional delivery, and academic support programs most effectively promote student success. Such insights can play a decisive role in helping at-risk students to learn and eventually graduate. However, while the surge in available data is reshaping the foundations of higher education, it increases the risk for “analysis paralysis,” reckless collection/storage, and improper use of data. Thus, institutions have an ethical responsibility to collect and use these data on behalf of students. In this webinar, Laura Jensen from Colorado State University and Vanessa Roof from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln share insights from their paper “The Ethical Use of Student Data and Analytics” available on the TS3 website and how they are grappling with these issues within their institutions.
SUNY Student Leadership Network: Applied Learning
Elise Newkirk- Kotflia explores the relationship between applied learning and student leadership. Elise joined the State University of New York shortly after receiving her Master of the Arts Degree from the University at Albany where she studied Women’s Studies and Public policy with a research concentration on community-university partnerships. Her current work responsibilities involve directing the SUNY Applied Learning Initiative as well as SUNY and the Vibrant Community, one of the 6 Big Ideas put forth in The Power of SUNY: Strategic Plan 2010 & Beyond. Elise is interested in the best practices associated with coalition building and community engagement, especially the formation of reciprocal and sustainable partnerships. She currently on the board of the National Society for Experiential Education and on the National Association of System Heads High Impact Practices Leadership Team.
