Data for Effective Scaling
This webinar is intended to share theories and lessons learned to support campus and system leaders in their scaling efforts. Jason Lane, Executive Director of the Strategic, Academic and Innovative Leadership (SAIL) Institute for the State University of New York and a member of the TS3 steering committee, will discuss the theory change regarding large change efforts. Robert Todd, Director of Policy and Partnership Development at the University System of Georgia, will present on the role of data in scaling efforts. USG was awarded the TS3 HIPs grant in December, so he will also share a little bit about USG’s TS3 HIPs project.
Building A Value Based Culture Around Data Analytics
A rapidly growing trend among higher education institutions is to increase the abundance and availability of student data. Included are traditional data such as demographics and academic performance; newly emerging data from learning management systems and student ID card usage; and outcomes data including employment, wages, and volunteerism. When assembled, this data can create remarkable profiles of individual students and provide new insights into how to improve the learning experience. For example, they can yield new insights as to which curriculum designs, instructional delivery, and academic support programs most effectively promote student success. Such insights can play a decisive role in helping at-risk students to learn and eventually graduate. However, while the surge in available data is reshaping the foundations of higher education, it increases the risk for “analysis paralysis,” reckless collection/storage, and improper use of data. Thus, institutions have an ethical responsibility to collect and use these data on behalf of students. In this webinar, Laura Jensen from Colorado State University and Vanessa Roof from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln share insights from their paper “The Ethical Use of Student Data and Analytics” available on the TS3 website and how they are grappling with these issues within their institutions.
Leading Your Campus through Conflict and Change
This session will explore the relationship between change and conflict, both external conflict as well as internal. The first part of the workshop will look at some of the external factors/conflicts that place pressure on the higher education organization. We will discuss what these factors mean for the field, as well as ways that higher education organizations can proactively embrace these influences and lead through the change process. These external pressures and conflicts can lead to high levels of uncertainty and conflict within an organization. The second part of this workshop will consist of exploring the interpersonal conflict that can arise in the workplace, and how leaders can appropriately manage and lead through these situations. Shifting Mindsets for Successful Leadership in Higher Education
As leaders traverse their career, they carry with them specific experiences which shape their perceptions in many ways. One of the challenges that leaders endure is the mindset that is reticent to shift directions. If leaders are to make any inroads with colleagues and students, the ability to pivot from one framework of thinking to another, in quick and seamless fashion, requires an open mind and a nimble approach. The ability to reframe the mind toward actionable resolutions and high levels of engagement requires that leaders work to listen, learn, and lead accordingly. This engaging, hands-on workshop will equip leaders with the necessary tools to return to their campuses with a renewed sense and vision of potential for themselves, and those that they lead.
Empowered Supervision for Organizational Performance in Higher Education
In order to be an effective supervisor it is critically important to understand all the dynamics involved. This session will engage participants in discussions surrounding the difference between staff supervision and staff development, the basic needs of people in groups and how to meet them, and the stages of group development and how they interplay with how the organization changes. Working in a unionized environment is another dynamic that must be considered, and will be a focus of the workshop. We will review a staff coaching model, effective ways to give feedback, and motivation techniques.
